From 15 March to 5 April 2026, Yuwapothichon Camp “Dek Nok Camp” brought together a diverse group of young people from across Thailand for 21 days of transformative, experience-based learning. Rooted in the principle of “living, learning, and growing together,” the camp created a space for youth aged 15–21 to explore life questions, discover alternative learning pathways, and deepen their understanding of themselves and the world around them.
This approach resonates strongly with emerging models of alternative education in Thailand, such as those highlighted by Khaoyai Connect, which emphasize learning through real-life experience, connection with nature, and the integration of local wisdom. These models challenge conventional classroom-based systems by creating learning ecosystems where young people can develop holistically—intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.
Throughout the program, participants—including novice monks, out-of-school youth, and students from formal education systems—engaged in hands-on activities that nurtured life skills, leadership, and inner growth. Through shared daily living, they cultivated empathy, built meaningful relationships, and developed a deeper sense of identity and purpose—connections that extend far beyond the camp itself.
A Space of Opportunity for All Youth
“Dek Nok Camp” was intentionally designed to support young people facing barriers to formal education, including economic and social challenges. In an inclusive and supportive environment, participants were encouraged to recognize their self-worth, discover their potential, and build the confidence to navigate society with resilience.
More than a temporary learning space, the camp serves as a platform for nurturing emerging leaders—young people empowered to contribute positively to their communities and society at large.

Holistic Learning for Life
The camp’s learning approach integrated multiple dimensions:
- Self-awareness and self-care through reflection and lived experience
- Practical knowledge and life skills for navigating real-world challenges
- Appreciation of diversity, compassion, and human connection
- Environmental awareness and relationship with nature
- Critical engagement with social issues, inequality, and belief systems
- Exploration of future livelihoods aligned with individual strengths
Advancing SDGs and Child Protection
This initiative contributes meaningfully to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly expanding access to quality education, reducing inequalities, promoting well-being, and strengthening peaceful and inclusive societies. At its core, the camp also embodies child protection principles—providing a safe and supportive environment where young people are respected, heard, and empowered, ensuring that no one is left behind.
Collaboration and Gratitude
This initiative was organized by Young Awakening Institution, in collaboration with International Network of Engaged Buddhists and Bodhiyalaya Foundation. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Bodhiyalaya Foundation for their trust and partnership in supporting the care and well-being of novice monks throughout the camp.
Looking Ahead
While the camp has concluded, its impact continues through the lives of its participants—each carrying forward new insights, skills, and a renewed sense of purpose.
By connecting experiential learning spaces like “Dek Nok Camp” with broader movements in alternative education, we are reminded that meaningful learning can happen anywhere—when young people are given the space, support, and trust to grow.
Because investing in inclusive, compassionate learning is not only about transforming individual lives—it is about building the foundation for a more just, peaceful, and sustainable society.
