Meetings with Remarkable Buddhists: Socially Engaged Buddhism in Japan in the 21st Century

Interviews with Japanese Buddhist priests involved in the social problems plaguing post-bubble Japan, such as end-of-life care, suicide prevention, disaster relief care, homelessness, anti-nuclear activism, and peace.

In the space of the past sixteen years, a specific new Socially Engaged Buddhist movement has grown in Japan to meet these challenges.

This podcast is sponsored by The International Buddhist Exchange Center (IBEC) @ Kodosan in Yokohama which will publish these case studies in 2023 in “An Engaged Buddhist History of Japan: Historical Perspectives & Contemporary Exemplars”.

Buddhism with a small 'b'

For over 30 years the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB) has been faciltiating impactful civil society work with grassroots organizations across the globe through the lens of socially-engaged Buddhism.

Sulak Sivakrasa, INEB’s founder, coined the term ‘Buddhism with a small b’ as a reminder to concentrate on the core of the Buddha’s teaching, seeing beyond the myth, ritual and culture that often clouds our clear perception.

From peacebuilding and women’s empowerment to interfaith-dialogue, holistic education, environmentalism and child protection, this podcast offers you a glimpse into the lives and work of INEB activists transforming society one mindful breath at a time.

Season 1 coming September, 2022!
