On 24 April 2026, the INEB Child Protection Team warmly welcomed Venerable Bhikkhu Kotte Upananda from the Sri Lanka Network of Engaged Buddhists (SriNEB) to Chiang Mai. His visit was inspired by a deep interest in community-based social engagement and the work of INEB members supporting children and youth in Northern Thailand.
During his time with us, we had the opportunity to visit several project sites and witness firsthand the commitment of young monks and community members who are actively engaged in social initiatives. The exchange created a meaningful space for dialogue, reflection, and shared learning across contexts—highlighting the living practice of engaged Buddhism in action.
One of the highlights of the visit was a trip to Wat Phra Singh Woramahaviharn in Chiang Mai, where we explored the historical significance of the Ubosot Song Sangha(Dual Ordination Hall). This unique structure is believed to have once been used for joint monastic ceremonies of both monks and bhikkhunis, offering a powerful reminder of the historical presence of fully ordained women in the Buddhist tradition. Though modest in size, the ubosot carries profound cultural and spiritual meaning, reflecting a more inclusive vision of the Sangha in earlier times.
This visit sparked thoughtful discussions on gender, inclusion, and the evolving role of Buddhist institutions in promoting equity and compassion in contemporary society. It also resonated with ongoing conversations within INEB and its partners on the importance of creating inclusive spiritual spaces that honor dignity and participation for all.
Throughout the visit, what stood out most was the shared sense of purpose—across countries and communities—to nurture compassionate leadership, protect the well-being of children and youth, and strengthen the role of Buddhist values in addressing today’s social challenges.
INEB extends its heartfelt appreciation to Venerable Upananda for his visit, openness, and inspiration. Encounters like these remind us that meaningful change grows through connection, dialogue, and collective care.
